Upchuck – New Case
Upchuck wrapped up their album preview with “New Case”, the final single before I’m Nice Now drops on October 3rd. Ty Segall produced the album at Sonic Ranch Studio in the Texas desert, and his influence is evident in how the songs balance melodic hooks with fuzzy guitar tones.
The Atlanta punk band recorded live to tape after tightening their sound on the road. They kept taking minimal, adding a few overdubs. Drummer Chris Salgado contributed vocals in Spanish for the first time on an album, blending cumbia influences from his upbringing with the band’s punk foundation. The Stooges served as a significant reference point during the recording process.
“New Case” moves on a walking bass line from Ausar Ward, with Mikey Durham and Hoff’s guitars adding scuzz on top. Singer KT’s vocal delivery locks into a groove that sits somewhere between punk and funk rhythm. She sings about relief at being among old friends rather than dealing with new problems or legal troubles.
Cissi Efraimsson directed and animated a claymation video for the track that leans into horror aesthetics.
Upchuck is currently on a North American tour that runs through the end of October, then heads to the UK and Europe in November for festival appearances and club shows. Their last album was 2023’s Bite The Hand That Feeds.
